2017 Environmental Challenge Earth Day Events

Press Release - 4/10/2017
April 22nd is Earth Day, and once again Lincolnville’s Willie Galimore Center, 399 Riberia Street, will be the venue of an Environmental Challenge Weekend, providing educational and entertaining fun for the whole family. The two-day event begins with a forum on Friday evening,  On Saturday the March for Science leads off the day’s activities at 9:00 AM followed by Vendors and educational activities that begin at 10 AM.  All events are free and open to the public.

On Friday, April 21, everyone is invited to a panel discussion with audience participation to be moderated by former CNN anchor, Brian J. Nelson. There will be a reception from 5:00 – 6:00 PM at the Willie Galimore Center with light food and drink provided by Rype & Readi Market, followed by the panel discussion of environmental topics, including sea-level rise, environmental legislation, fracking, offshore drilling, and beach re-nourishment.  The six participating panelists include: Matanzas Riverkeeper Neil Armingeon; Environmental Lawyer Jane West; Allen Tilley, Sierra Club and Professor Emeritus University of North Florida; Environmental Youth Council President Hunter Miller; Chair of the Soil and Water Management Commission Chris Wadelton; and Bill Hamilton, owner of Southern Horticulture and environmental activitist.  Audience participation will be allowed and encouraged and they can view a conservation photography exhibit on display.

At 9:00 AM on Saturday, the ‘March for Science’ will depart from the Galimore Center, joined by individuals, families and students.  This march is held in conjunction with the March in Washington, DC and other cities and communities throughout the United States. It will last for about one hour and originates from and returns to the Galimore Center.  Some of the students participating have offered to carry their science projects with them.  Following the march, the student science projects will be displayed indoors at the Galimore Center.

From 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM, the grounds of the Center will come alive with music by Environmental Folk Singer Emmett Carlisle and joined during the day by, Elizabeth Roth, Uncle Eddie and Robin, Chelsea Saddler, Paul Garfinkel, Amy Hendrickson and Steve Lowe.  There will be face-painting, children’s activities, exhibits and artwork provided by environmental organizations and vendors from around the county, as well as the opportunity to purchase arts and crafts. The Lincolnville Garden will be open for visitors to wander through a maze of vegetables and flowers.  Participants will be informed about mosquitos, honey bees and bats, as well as having the opportunity to visit the Traveling Zoo from Whitney.Labs. Cats and dogs will be available for adoption from Ayla’s Acres from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM only.  And a Dunk Tank will be available for visitors to attempt to dunk the willing volunteers. You can even have a look under the hood of the latest hybrid vehicle.  And for those with an appetite, food will be available for sale by Golden Glory Seafood and the Corner Market.  There will even be the opportunity to register to vote or to sign up for Vote by Mail.

“This event is designed to be a fun time for all with an emphasis on environmental awareness,” event organizer John Pilecki said. “It’s a chance for people to see and learn about local issues affecting our environment. More importantly, it’s an educational and fun day out with the family.”

“Last year I was honored to spend time volunteering as a face painter,” said local artist Jackie Rock.  “I am always surprised to discover their requests are of sea animals or the words ‘Love’ and ‘Peace.’  Creating art with kids is fun”

During this Earth Day weekend, there will be many opportunities to learn about environmental issues confronting our county and state. The event, which is in its third year, is sponsored by local businesses and organizations in conjunction with the St. Johns Democratic Party. Events and parking are free.
