Comedian and Storyteller
Derek Coghlan is a storyteller from Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, a small town in the middle of nowhere in the middle of Ireland. He came to America in 1990 and after a seven year employment odyssey he finally found his way to Landrum Middle School. He currently teaches English at Allen D. Nease High School and single-handedly tries to ruin the minds of America's future.
Derek has written and performed six one man shows. Repainting Larry Cooper, Tog Out. You're On, And One for Yourself, You ain't from round here, are you Australia Boy?, Nobody in my Family ever wore a Kilt, and most recently, I’ll Give You a Day. He has performed these shows at the Limelight Theatre, St. Augustine, FL, The Pioneer Barn, St. Augustine, FL, Players by the Sea, Jacksonville Beach, FL, 9th and Main, Jacksonville, FL, and The Theatre Project, Baltimore, MD. Derek was the Master of Ceremonies for the 2013 and 2014 Jacksonville Beaches Celtic Fest. He was also the Master of Ceremonies for the 2012 Celtic Festival in St. Augustine and a speaker at WJCT’s 2014 Teach Conference in Jacksonville. He is a regular contributor to Swamp Radio.
Derek’s stories are about the great ordinary lunacy of growing up in small town Ireland and then coming to America. He talks about family and religion, hitch hiking and drinking, smoking, and lying. He has borrowed eggs from priests, kidnapped girls from convent schools, managed country and western night-clubs, stolen cars and bicycles, and even the odd heart or two. Performing his work is cheaper and hopefully more effective than therapy. If you want to see Derek in action you can find him on YouTube.
